Britons eat significantly less amount of fruits and veggies than the standard recommendations by WHO.
Despite the widely available advice on nutrition in the UK most Britons do not eat a sufficient amount of fruit and vegetables in their daily diet, according to a study carried out by the European Food Information Council (EUFIC).The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends minimum 400g (14.1oz) fruit and vegetable consumption per day. The survey revealed that on average, Britons eat 258gm (9.1oz) of fruit and vegetables a day, compared with a European average of 386gm (13.6oz). Only 4 European countries met the WHO recommendations- Poland (577g), Italy (452g), Germany (442g) and Austria (413g).
The EUFIC report said, "A majority of Europeans do not reach WHO recommendations on vegetables and fruit consumption. High intakes of fruit and vegetables were associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers."
