Daily intake of Calcium and regular exercises increases the Bone Mineral Density and prevents development of osteoporosis.
Professor Timothy Lohman and colleagues from University of Arizona has reported in the Journal Osteoporosis International that supplementing post-menopausal women with calcium supplements and regular exercise makes their bone fit and prevents bone loss with increase in Bone Mineral Density (BMD) which highly reduces the risk of developing Osteoporosis in older women.
Osteoporosis mostly occurs in old age people and is more prominent in women than man it is caused by the weaning bone which has low levels of calcium and phosphate which is required for strong bone formation. If low levels of calcium and phosphate occur it leads to weaker bones which become more fragile and brittle which is susceptible to fractures and bone breaks.This Bone Estrogen Strength Training (BEST) Study supplemented the study patients daily with two Citracal tablets (800 mg calcium) and regular exercise and the patients were followed up for four years and the study recruits were found to develop an increased BMD compared to recruits who did not take calcium supplements. This study has shown that regular long term supplementation of calcium and regular exercise increases the BMD which helps in maintaining the bone minerals and avoids the risk of developing osteoporosis.
