Researchers now say that calcium previously thought to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells may not actually be true due to inconsistent results obtained in a number of studies.
However researchers say that results of two well-designed, randomized controlled trials, have shown a moderate protective effect on development of colorectal adenomatous polyps, generally benign types occurring in about 30 per cent of middle-aged and older Americans.Although doubts about the importance of dietary calcium have surfaced in a number of studies researchers feel that further studies should be done to confirm the protective effects of the mineral on polyps so that if in fact helpful it could help those who have already had polyps reduce their raised risk of colorectal cancer.
