Jack Purves was born 13 weeks premature and weighed less than 1lb 6oz. He was so weak that he needed life support to help him breathe. Some timely blood transfusions ensured that he lived and grew stronger. Even his mother Donna Morgan who developed pneumonia and anemia after the very early birth had to be given blood transfusions to recover.
Now the mother and baby are back home and in gratitude to those who helped them, they are launching a campaign to fill the worryingly empty blood stocks in Scotland. The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service acknowledged that blood donations were 25 percent below the safe level. 'It's vitally important to give blood - it saves lives. Jack had to have blood because it helped him to fight infection. As he was trying to grow, he also needed a top-up as a boost to help him,' Ms Morgan said. National donor services manager Dr Moira Carter said that donations would drop off during the Easter period, 'If you've never given blood before, or just haven't given for a while, please go to Edinburgh Blood Donor Centre and give a donation before Easter. It's easy to do, we are open six days a week, and no appointment is needed,
