Can Dieting be Evolutionary?

A team led by Annika Felton of Australian National University has found that dieting may be an evolutionary phenomenon and not something that is unique to man.

A team led by Annika Felton of Australian National University has found that dieting may be an evolutionary phenomenon and not something that is unique to man.

The researchers studied 15 Peruvian spider monkeys in the Bolivian rainforest for the last 12 months and saw that these monkeys adopted habits similar to humans to shed flab.

“We found that the pattern of nutrient intake by wild spider monkeys, which are primarily fruit eaters, was almost identical to humans, who are omnivores," Dr Felton said.

The details of the study appear in the 'Behavioural Ecology.'
