Canadian astronaut Dave Williams, who participated in two space shuttle missions, has now taken up a new post. Williams, who was a medical specialist on the 1998 and 2007 missions, will now manage the medical robotics program at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Williams is also an accomplished spacewalker having 18 hours of experience. He joined the Canadian Space agency as an astronaut in 1992. Prior to this he worked in Toronto and Kitchener as a physician.

Dr Williams is professor in the Department of Surgery of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster at present. His role in the medical robotics program would be to explore the advances in surgery for local as well as remote care.

"His fearless dedication to finding new ways of bringing medical care to remote environments represents the most advanced edge of medicine under exploration these days," McMaster president Peter George said in a released statement.
