Researchers have discovered that the use of the drug sargramostim, also known as Leukine, have helped the patients of Crohn’s disease recover totally from their symptoms. The drug sargramostim is generally used for treating cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy.

Crohn’s disease is the condition that causes inflammation of the small intestine. This can cause pain and diarrhea. It is difficult to diagnose, as its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome etc. this condition may run in families. The condition is also called ileitis or enteritis.

The drug sargramostim is typically used to increase the recovery of the white blood cells that may drop during the chemotherapy administered to treat patients suffering from cancer. The drug helps the patient gain in immunity to fight outside germs.

Traditionally it is believed that Crohn’s disease is an over activation of the immune system and treatment comprised of giving medication to the patients that will suppress immunity. With the new treatment, there seems to be a total turn in the opposite direction of not lowering but increasing the immune system and allow the body to fight its own battles.
