Jayne Sullivan, who is suffering from breast cancer is camping outside the Welsh Assembly to enable all those on the NHS to receive Herceptin. She is trying to draw the attention of the ministers to the plight of the patients. She is willing to speak to the Welsh Health Minister Brian Gibbons only in public. The authorities are finding her campaign increasingly embarrassing, and the police force could do very little about it until she breaks a law.
Sullivan is seeking to make the drug available for early stage treatment of breast cancer, as research has already revealed that it could contribute towards preventing tumors. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (Nice) has to give its approval for the procedure before Gibbons can enforce it. As at present, the doctors concerned will have to decide upon whether the patients will benefit from the drug before prescribing it. In the meantime, other women who suffer from the disease have joined Ms Sullivan in the protest.
