The Centre has asked all states to conserve water through a judicious mix of major, medium and minor projects with due emphasis on traditional system of water harvesting.

It cautioned the states that the availability of water was highly variable and a comprehensive and integrated approach is the need of the hour.

The National Advisory Council on Recharge to Ground Water has taken several measures in connection with the management of ground water.

A Water Congress will be held here on September 11, where some of the success stories on water management would be explained to the nation.

The major disadvantage is that surface water is not being utilised optimally, said a statement of the Water Recourses Ministry issue today.

It also suggested that facilities for storing ground water should be created by completing all the on going projects in a time bound manner and plan for new schemes.

Storage sites provided by nature need to be utilized fully and optimally, it added.
