Union Minister for Health Anbumani Ramadoss announced on Saturday that four new centers of excellence in blood would be set up in the country and one of them would be located in Chennai. At a function organized by the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society, Ramadoss said that the centers would specialize in Transfusion Medicine.
Other routine activities would include blood extraction, separation and testing procedures. He also said the National AIDS Control Programme would receive $2.5 billion to take forward its third phase. Around 80% of the money would be spent in prevention activities, he added.Dr Ramadoss praised Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society for their timely action in helping with the plan for setting up the Red Ribbon Clubs across the state.
He also said that health education in schools was necessary to encourage preventive activities. Mr. Barnala said it was the duty of every person to work towards eradication of infections.
