Cervical Cancer Cured by New Surgery

The rate of survival in cervical cancer patients may be increased by 20 per cent by making several tweaks in major surgeries conducted to treat the cancer.

Professor Michael Hockel of the University of Leipzig and colleagues have revealed that the rate of survival in cervical cancer patients may be increased by 20 per cent by making several tweaks in major surgeries conducted to treat the cancer.

The researchers said that a new technique called as mesometrial resection (TMMR) was very successful in treating the cancer and that it also had lesser complications.

"Based on historical controls, TMMR without adjuvant radiation has the potential to improve survival by 15-20 per cent," Dr Hockel told the BBC. The new technique removes certain parts of the fallopian tubes, uterus, and of the vagina, which are said to be the main focus of tumor spread.

In a study on 212 patients, who underwent TMMR, the cancer relapsed in only 10 after 41 months. The five-year survival rate with the new surgery was 91 per cent as compared with about 70 per cent in the conventional cancer surgery.

The details of the study appear in The Lancet Oncology.
