German scientists have found that energy-saving compact fluorescent
lamps (CFLs) emit carcinogenic chemicals when they are switched on. These cancer
causing harmful chemicals like Phenol, naphthalene and styrene are released in the form of steam.
Scientists have warned that energy-saving bulbs should not be used in unventilated
places, left on for longer periods of time, used while reading or placed close
to a person’s head because they release poisonous materials.
The materials used to manufacture the lamps are probably responsible for these
potentially harmful side effects. Even though the Department of Environmental claims
CFLs to be safe, the EU plans to phase out its use by the end of next year.
