Charity Says Mothers With Twins Need More Help

Tamba (Twins and Multiple Births Association), a charity in the UK, has said that mothers with twins need more help to combat post-natal depression.

Tamba (Twins and Multiple Births Association), a charity in the UK, has said that mothers with twins need more help to combat post-natal depression. The charity said that birth advice for such women must include tips on breastfeeding many infants as well as places to seek help.

The charity surveyed 1,300 mothers and found that just 36% received advise and help concerning multiple births. "This is worrying as multiple-specific parent education and nutritional programmes have been found to have improved outcomes for babies and mothers," the charity revealed.

Tamba says that tailored parenting advice can make a difference in multiple pregnancies even though most of them are uneventful and do not have any complications. Some 17% of mothers in the survey depression post-natally, but in moms who received help the number dropped to 15%, while it hit 19% in moms who did not get any help.

"At the moment it is a matter of luck if parents-to-be get on to education classes tailored to multiple pregnancy to help prepare them. The rest are left scrabbling around on the internet for advice," said Tamba chief executive Keith Reed. "This education should be the rule, not the exception."

NICE is developing guidelines for care during multiple pregnancies, but these will only be released in 2011.
