The City Corporation of Chennai has commenced special Yoga sessions for pregnant women since this psycho-physical Indian system of health care enables delivery without any complications.

Presently, the programme is conducted at the Shenoy Nagar Health Centre that functions under the Chennai Corporation.

The bi-weekly three-hour classes are free-of-cost for the expectant mothers.

Since many city-based women had been experiencing pre-natal problems and post-natal complications, the health department of the corporation proposed this project.

The ladies in advanced stage of pregnancy are taught meditation, breathing exercises known as Pranayama in Yoga parlance and assorted exercises called Asanas.

Pre-natal or post-natal Yoga care and meditation ensure a facilitated delivery and sound health of the mother by mental and emotional balance, which in turn ensures a healthy baby.

"I am in the eighth month of my pregnancy. I have never done Yoga before. But, I am practising Asanas along with breathing exercises and meditation. It relaxes me, calms down my mind and eases my tension," said Vijaya, an expectant mother.

According to experts, performing the Asanas involves the mind on the body movements, which in turn dispel oddities endured during labour pain.

"Yoga eases the delivery of the child. The Asanas and meditation along with breathing exercises help in healthy growth of the foetus, that is why we are giving yoga lessons to pregnant women," said Aandal, a Yoga teacher.
