Four prisoners at Tiruchirappalli, India were diagnosed with severe symptoms of cholera.
It has been found that 18 inmates of the central prison are hospitalized after they showed symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting and food poisoning.Doctors, health officials and the prison officials fear that this might result in a cholera endemic.
Cholera is a water borne disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae and might have entered the prison through contaminated water resources. On the other hand doctors who examined the 4 prisoners said that they were given proper medications and that their conditions were stable.
Hence various preventive measures such as chlorination of the drinking water reservoirs, vaccinating the other 2500 inmates in the prison are undertaken.
Apart from cholera they also suspect food poisoning and allergic reaction to be the cause of acute diarrhea and vomiting.
But as of now the need of the hour is to contain the spread of cholera among the other prisoners.
