Cholesterol Drug Has a Favorable Effect on the Chronic Kidney Disease

Lipitor which is basically given to treat cholesterol is found to improve their kidney function in patients with heart disease.

It is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. he said that those patients who took 80 mg of the drug showed the highest improvement in the kidney function.

The drug is the world's top-selling prescription drug. The data of the study was presented at the American College of Cardiology annual scientific meeting in Atlanta.

50% of the patients, who took the 80 mg Lipitor drug which is chemically known as atorvastatin showed greater improvement with respect to their kidney disease.

Dr. James Shepherd of the University of Glasgow Medical School, said that the study analyzed 8,000 patients.

People with high cholesterol are often at an increased risk of developing kidney dysfunction. In such cases the patient’s kidney cannot effectively filter toxins from the blood which is the main cause for kidney failure.

Patients who took the 10 mg lowest dose of Lipitor had a 5.6 % improvement in kidney function.

Those who took 80 mg experienced an 8.5 % increase in kidney function. Hence further studies are necessary in this direction to prove that this drug could be potentially used to improve kidney dysfunctions.
