Chronic back pain may be relieved by special physiotherapy

A specially designed form of physiotherapy is all set to provide relief to patients suffering from severe back pain due to spinal disc protrusions, spinal canal stenosis, or narrowing, or other disc diseases.

The physiotherapy method is called Souchard’s global postural re-education and consists of stretching, and strengthening of paraspinal and muscles of the abdominal wall that will lead to correction of posture and decompression of the spinal cord. Researchers are of the opinion these muscles become weak and shortened by stress and overuse and cause the back pain.

For most of the patients suffering from lower back pain or neck pain, treatment is often in the form of physiotherapy, oral and intramuscular/intravenous anti-inflammatory medications, acupuncture, epidural injections and rest. This is the time when patients are reported to have lower pain and more physical fitness that had made them enjoy the things they could not do previously because of the backaches.

Researchers feel that if the procedure could consistently bring relief to the people who are suffering from back pains without the help of medication and surgery, it will be a major breakthrough for patients as well as medical care providers.
