Chronic Wasting Disease In Alberta

Culling of deer to commence in Alberta.

According to Alberta wildlife officials culling of deer will soon commence due to the attack of chronic wasting disease that has affected the deer population.

This disease which affects the nervous system of the deer is similar to bovine spongiform encephalopathy or the mad cow disease that affects the cattle.

Lyle Fullerton, speaking on behalf of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development said that as the knowledge about the spread and mechanism of this disease is not known, culling is the only way to deal with this disorder right now.

Culling will first begin along Red Deer River near Empress and in the second phase it will move to Wainwright area which is south of Lloydminster. Helicopters will be used to collect deer this time beside the ground team.
