Recent clinical trials conducted on the Organ Care System developed by Transmedics gives hope of delivering a still-beating heart to a transplant patient.
This device is currently undergoing phase II clinical trials.

Once the heart is removed from the donor’s body, it is placed in this OCS device. Soon the heart is revived to a beating state and is maintained at the appropriate temperature. Heart monitors are also provided to evaluate the functioning of the heart during the transport phase.

This device holds immense promise as it can help boost donor-heart function as well as help transplant teams make an assessment of the condition of donor hearts. This device aids in understanding the risks of potential rejection of the organ as it can be tested in the device for a longer period of time.
