A cochlear implant workshop in Chennai led by experts restored hearing to two needy hearing impaired children in a demo cochlear implant surgery
A Cochlear implant workshop was conducted today, 7th January 2012, by the Department of ENT, Head & Neck surgery, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research institute, Chennai, South India. Prof Joachim Mueller from the University of Munich, Germany accompanied by Dr John Martin Hempel led the workshop. The theme of the workshop was to demonstrate detailed surgical techniques of cochlear implantation surgery. The organizing chairman Prof A Ravi Kumar and organizing secretary Prof Senthil coordinated with the international faculty to highlight the latest trends in the field of cochlear implantation at this workshop.
The academic interactions included inputs by Prof Sanjeev Mohanty and other ENT luminaries and delegates who attended the workshop. The workshop was a one day program that included a demonstration of cochlear implantation surgery on the skull bones of cadavers thereby imparting necessary detailed instruction and initiating cochlear implant surgeons. This was followed by cochlear implantation surgery on two needy hearing impaired children by Prof Joachim Mueller.
Cochlear implant surgery is a delicate, precise and minute surgery performed under the microscope on the inner ear to stimulate the nerves involved in hearing using a state of the art device called the Cochlear implant which is presently manufactured only in 3 countries outside India. This device enables the implantee to listen to sounds and speech thereby bringing them back to the mainstream of life and making them socially productive.
