A recent UK survey has pointed the common causes for getting distracted behind the wheel - mobile phones, music, cosmetics, snacks and drinks. The researchers found that eight in 10 motorists put lives at risk by getting distracted behind the wheel.
According to the survey for price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, an alarming 82 percent of drivers confessed to having been badly distracted at some stage.
Music is the single biggest cause and 61 percent admit that they get distracted while changing CDs, music on their iPod or stations on the radio.
Half say snacks and drinks are to blame and 23 percent admit making or taking calls on a hand-held mobile phone while driving.
Among the under-35 age group, 36 percent confessed to sending texts at the wheel - and two per cent said they looked at Facebook while driving.
Five percent admitted applying perfume or make-up in the mirror and 15 percent said they did not wear a seatbelt.
