Commonly Used Firecrackers Have High Decibel Levels

A new survey has revealed that the upcoming Diwali festival could be the noisiest of them all due to the increasing decibel levels of some of the commonly used firecrackers. According to the recent survey carried out by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board in association with Ngo Awaaz and the Mumbai Police, the firecrackers manufactured by eight of the 15 popular firecracker brands had higher decibel levels than the maximum prescribed by the Supreme Court.

The spokesperson for AWAAZ Foundation Sumaira Abdulali said that some of the single bomb crackers widely used by the public had decibel levels of more than the maximum limit of 145 decibels set by the Supreme Court.

“Commonly available firecrackers were tested for noise and air pollution levels and for compliance with Supreme Court orders on disclosure of chemical composition on packaging at Wadala yesterday. However, the explosives department, which is responsible for compliance at manufacturing stage, did not attend”, Abdulali added.
