Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin commenting on the deaths said “The bottom line is they did something they shouldn’t have done and they lost their lives.” In his opinion, raw oysters do not pose a major health threat.The DeKalb Farmers’ Market reiterated that they have always been enabling a fresh lot of oysters. According to Frank Velasquez, a sea food buyer, raw oysters are safe for consumption only during certain months, ideally between October and March. Further, it is imperative to buy from a credible source, accompanied with the date the oysters were out of water. Experts say, it is dangerous to consume raw oysters that have been out of water for 14 days or more.
