New York – A country notorious for war and strife, Afghanistan, is also infamous with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Afghanistan has attracted the attention of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which has pressed for adequate funds necessary to improve the health of women and children.
The UNFPA is determined to improve the lot of women to include empowerment, maternal health and prevention of AIDS/HIV. The chief of UNFPA is of the opinion that the contribution of women to families and to the community as a whole translates as progress of the nation. Obviously when women are wronged, it shows in the health of the nation; Afghanistan bears testimony to the ills meted out to women. Therefore, measures to empower and uplift women will benefit Afghanistan as a nation greatly. Putting an end to violence against women, by allowing the men to participate in such endeavors, will bring reprieve to the many who suffer violence silently. The UNFPA key agenda will be offer crucial services in healthcare to women that would encompass the gamut of family planning, proper medical assistance at birth and the right to emergency obstetric care.
