In a step to prevent the rising pollution of the Ganga river, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) authorities launched a crackdown on eight tanneries in Jajmau, sealing two of the tanneries. An official with the UPPCB said that one of the two tanneries was shut down since it was operating above the pollution norms and had also increased the capacity of the drum without acquiring any license with the PCB
The second tannery was closed down after complaints from a local who said that the noise coming out of the tannery had led to the collapse of a wall in his house.
“One of the residents had complained to the district administration that the wall of a house had collapsed due to the vibrations produced by the tannery, which is located adjacent to the house. The tannery was thus sealed and its owner was served notice to shut down the unit as its operation may damage the house”, UPPCB regional officer, Radhey Shyam said.
