Quite a figure of convicted paedophiles, drug dealers and brutal thugs were listed amid 4,000 and more criminals who applied for jobs in Britain as school teachers in a single year. The Criminal Records Bureau tipped off schools after running checks - but there is no record of how many were hired, the Sun reported Monday.
Over 50 of the offences uncovered were sex crimes. They included four for indecent assaults on children. Eight other convictions were for gross indecency, 12 for indecent exposure and 19 involved prostitution.
Violent offences totalled 830. Of the 550 drug convictions among would-be teachers, 14 were for supplying class A drugs like heroin and cocaine. The list included 11 arson offences and two for making threats to kill.
The bureau has insisted that many of the 4,098 applicants for teaching posts who were red-flagged last year would have been automatically barred.
Siobhan Freegard, founder of parenting website Netmums, said: "It is shocking thousands of offenders are applying to work with children when they have convictions for child sex attacks, violence and drugs."
"Parents will be appalled," she added.
