The curative properties of silver nanoparticles may be useful in prevention of blood clots, according to researchers at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
The research was done at biochemistry department of the University."While we were experimenting, we found that silver nanoparticles have reduced the activity of platelets dramatically. It was our first finding," said professor D. Das.
The researchers claim that their discovery has the potential of providing an alternative to aspirin and other such agents that are currently used to prevent blood clots in coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke.
Silver nanoparticles have also an additional benefit. It is anti-bacterial and antiseptic.
Platelets basically are cells that aid in the formation of blood clots. When bleeding from a wound suddenly occurs, the platelets gather at the wound and attempt to block the blood flow.
But, higher than normal count of platelets, causes serious health risks. Too much clotting of the blood can lead to formation of blood clots that can cause stroke.
