Cure for Diseases may be Found by Injecting Human Genes into Goats, Cows, and Sheep

Genetic engineering research on goats, sheep and cattle, using human DNA, has been given the green signal.

Genetic engineering research on goats, sheep and cattle, using human DNA, has been given the green signal. Scientists have been permitted to see if the animals will produce human proteins in their milk.

Environmental Risk Management Authority gave the go-ahead to AgResearch to breed and keep genetically modified animals at the Ruakura research facility, near Hamilton, reports New Zealand Herald News.

Simon Terry, of environmental consultancy the Sustainability Council, welcomed conditions making it clear the milk could not be made for commercial sale.

AgResearch hopes human proteins made by the animals could eventually be used to make "biopharmaceuticals" to treat rare human diseases.
