Death Toll due to Cholera Rises to 48 in Angola

The cholera epidemic has swept through Angola covering the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Benguela, and Kwanza Norte. Since the declaration of the cholera outbreak on February 13, the number of reported cases has risen to 2,026 with a death toll of 48.

On Sunday WHO representative, Angola Fatoumata Diallo handed over 7 tons of medicine and equipment to the Angolan Vice Minister of Health Jose Van- Dunem.

The National Laboratory of Public Health has isolated the bacteria Vibrio cholera 01 stereotype INABA in nine out of 13 samples of patients showing symptoms of vomiting and acute diarrhea.

192 new cases with one death have been reported in the last 24 hours in Luanda.

The WHO along with the Angolan Ministry of health has implemented several field activities to contain the spread of this disease, which can lead to dehydration and subsequent death if not treated rapidly.
