Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Undergoes Angioplasty

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit underwent angioplasty for blocked artery, say hospital officials.

"Angioplasty surgery was performed Tuesday. It was performed at 8.30 a.m. and it went on for over an hour. The surgery was successful," said an official from Escorts Hospital on the condition of anonymity.

Coronary Balloon Angioplasty
Coronary balloon angioplasty is an interventional procedure wherein blood flow is restored in a blocked blood artery supplying the heart.

A stent was put in the right artery of the 74-year-old chief minister. She was admitted to the hospital Monday evening after she complained of fatigue and throat infection.

"She is fine and will be discharged soon," said the official.

She also underwent a heart surgery in 2001.

Angioplasty
Arteries supplying the heart is sometimes blocked by plaque leading to heart attack.Angioplasty is a method by which a part of the blocked artery is expanded to place a stent.Once this is done normal blood flow resumes and the heart regains its normal function.
