Delihites Turning to Oral Contraceptives as Condom Sales Drop

A survey conducted in Delhi has found that many people in the capital prefer to use oral contraceptives and that the use of condoms has slowly declined

A survey conducted in Delhi has found that many people in the capital prefer to use oral contraceptives and that the use of condoms has slowly declined over the last three years.

Latest figures from the Delhi statistical handbook show that in the three years between 2006-2007 and 2008-2009 the usage of condoms has gone down from 1,23,77,000 to 94,76,000 and the usage of pills has gone up from 1,19,549 to 1,81,412.

“These figures confirm a growing awareness among women about the need for effective contraceptive measures. The trend is not disturbing as young adults need to know all options available, this will enable couples to choose the most suitable contraceptive," said Director of Delhi Health Services S Bhattacharjee.

The survey also found that condoms are the most preferred form of contraception, but that pills were being preferred due to their reliability.
