Democracy Not To Be Forced On People

Democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan should not be forced on the people.Proper conditions has to prevail to set up a democratic nation otherwise it will be a total failure.

A Penn state researcher in his new book 'The Failure of Democratic Nation Building: Ideology Meets Evolution' Dr. Steven A Peterson, professor of politics, says that Democracy should not or cannot be forcibly thrusted on a nation.

Humans are social beings with an intrinsic need for hierarchical and authoritarian social and political structures.

Democracy on the other hand requires unique conditions before it is accepted by the people.

It takes a lot of time and acceptance from the people. For democracy to have a strong hold then conditions such as economic development, lack of religious clash, education to all and proper functioning of the government should be made possible.

Without these conditions it is very difficult to take democracy into a nation.

Democracy is very fragile and should be established and handled with care otherwise it will result in a complete failure.

When America is showing interest in the affairs of other countries like Iraq and Afghanistan it has strained the internal democracy.

This is a matter of concern not only to American people but also to fellow democracies.

The author says that instead of concentrating on developing democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan, America has to concentrate in strengthening and preserving democracy at home.
