Dengue Continues Its Relentless March in Delhi

The threat of dengue continues to spread across the national capital with more than 1,000 cases registered so far with health experts predicting that the number will rise further. With just a month to go before the Commonwealth Games, the health officials in the capital have failed to control the spread of the disease even as Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) workers try to contain it by spraying anti-larvae solutions in a 1.5 kms radius around the games venues.

However they have been hampered by the attitudes in some of the richer localities of the city with the workers complaining that they are being sent away by security guards at a number of bungalows.

Speaking out against the problems faced by his organization, MCD health official Dr V K Monga said, “We are trying to conduct fumigation but residents are unwilling to let the MCD staff enter their premises. Besides, more than 20 per cent of the houses in these areas are locked. People keep fountains and plants in the living room, where mosquitoes start breeding. Many staff have been turned away by the guards of these bungalows.”
