Dengue Epidemic Threatens Pakistan

Mosquito-borne dengue fever has so far claimed 35 lives across Pakistan, as many as some 1,400 patients were declared positive for dengue virus

The Dengue Epidemic, an acute infectious tropical disease, which started to spread across from early September, has so far claimed 35 lives across Pakistan especially from south province Sindh & northwest frontier Peshawar.

A local media reported on Thursday that around 1,400 patients out of 3640 have been declared positive for dengue virus. They were admitted to hospitals across the country. Moreover 197 – dengue positive cases have been declared out of 559 patients admitted with symptoms to those of dengue fever in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

It is believed that the disease is spread thru an arbovirus transmitted by mosquitoes prevailing in the unhygienic conditions around various recreational spots, educational institutions, hospitals etc., and the fever is characterized by symptoms like high fever, headache, severe muscle and joint pains and rashes.

As a precautionary measure, a nationwide campaign has been launched by Authorities to create public awareness about the disease and spraying mosquitocides for the elimination of mosquitoes has been directed as to avoid the spread of the virus.
