Verbally abused people are 1.6 times more likely to have symptoms of depression and anxiety as those who had not been verbally abused, a study on 5,614 people aged between 15 and 54, conducted by Florida State University researchers revealed.Professor Natalie Sachs-Ericsson explained, ‘Childhood abuse of any type has the tendency to create self-critical mentalities during adulthood’.
Parents must be well educated about the long-term effects of verbal abuse on their children.
Researchers assess self-criticism of the participants, by making them respond to statements such as, ‘I live on my mistake more than I should,’ and ‘I realize a significant difference between how I am now and how I would like to be’.
Parental physical abuse (6.6 per cent) or sexual abuse by a relative or stepparent (4.5 per cent) were resulted more self-critical state to the subjects, but self-criticism may not be an important factor in the development of depression and anxiety for physically and sexually abused participants.
