The 19th World Diabetes Congress organized by Johannesburg, South Africa to be held on December 3-7 in Cape Town has issued a warning that Diabetes would affect an estimate around six percent of the world population by 2025.
Presently, annual death toll due to diabetes reaches over three million people worldwide. An estimate of people with diabetes is expected to be around 240 million by 2025 all over the world, out of which 80 percent will originate from developing countries.
International Diabetes foundation organized a conference to motivate health authorities to prioritize the prevention of diabetes.
Chairperson of the congress Local Organizing Committee, Francis Bonnici said that awareness concerning the seriousness of the effects of Diabetes is necessary in the African continent because of limited regional health resources.
Rapid changes in the social and cultural habits, like increasing urbanization and implementation of sedentary lifestyles, result in the increasing number of people developing and those getting prone to type 2 diabetes.
"We hope the Congress will influence African health authorities to prioritize the needs of people with diabetes, assist in the education and empowerment, and deliver a fair and equitable service to them,” said Bonnici.
