American scientists have identified a single protein that plays a central coordinating role towards the development of diabetes.
Researchers at Stanford University team found that the protein, calcineurin, is vital to the proper functioning of the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells that are defective in diabetes. This protein has been found to be responsible for the regulation of 10 genes that had already been linked to diabetes. This study in mice has led to the hope of new treatments for this condition which affects millions worldwide.
According to the American Diabetes Association this study has a big potential and it now has to be taken to humans.
