The charity Diabetes UK has released new data, which shows that diabetes is responsible for killing one in ten people in the UK.

Some 11.6% of deaths among 20- to 79-year-olds in England can be attributed to diabetes, the charity said. The data also says that diabetes causes strokes, heart attack and kidney failure, which are reported as primary causes of death.

"There are 2.3 million people diagnosed with diabetes and over half a million don't know they have it," said Douglas Smallwood, chief executive of Diabetes UK. If recent trends hold out then one in eight deaths will be because of diabetes by 2010, the charity said.
