A Japanese study has revealed that increased intake of soy and its isoflavones may help overweight women reduce their risk of developing diabetes.
The study involved 25,872 men and 33,919 women aged between 45 and 75 years. the dietary intakes of soy product and isoflavones were assessed by suing a 147-item food questionnaire. in the five-year follow-up period of the study, some 1,114 people developed diabetes.The researchers from the International Medical Center of Japan. report that overweight women who consumed over 118 grams of soy a day had a 40 to 50 percent lower risk of developing diabetes as compared with women who consumed less than 43 grams of soy a day.
The details of the study are published in the Journal of Nutrition.
