Poultry egg should be avoided by patients with high cholesterol especially in diabetics, now Punjab University scientist in India has developed a egg variety that does no harm to diabetics.

The incidence of non-insulin dependent diabetes is growing especially in Indian sub-continent. 'The modified egg is a good dietary supplement for diabetics,' said S.K. Taneja, a professor in the university's Department of Zoology to IANS.

The inclusion of the modified egg in a patient's diet helped reduce the accelerated weight gain, decrease bad cholesterol (LDL and VLDL), increase good cholesterol (HDL), lower blood glucose level by increasing insulin sensitivity and lower blood pressure level.

Taneja had earlier developed 'smart eggs' -- low cholesterol eggs enriched with vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acid - for patients of heart ailments.

Dr.Taneja did initial trials of eggs on himself and claimed that diabetics could now have eggs daily or on a routine basis without bothering about cholesterol levels going up and blood glucose level getting affected.

'In fact this egg will bring down the blood glucose level marginally though I wouldn't say that it will help diabetics give up medicines they take to control blood sugar levels,' added Taneja.

The modified egg was the result of six years of research to look at the nutritional aspect of poultry birds along with efforts to take an egg's mineral ingredients to a level that is desired for diabetics.

Taneja said :' Diabetes could lead to several other diseases like hypertension, stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney damage and blindness.'
