Off late there has been a surge of teen suicides. In this space, we have carried many stories of depressed teens ending their lives in despair. However, this one is different, and explains the extent of the problem amongst our budding youth.
A teenage girl, called Ebony (name changed to protect identity), undergoing treatment with a reputed psychiatrist for depression, confessed to attempts of ending her life several times. She responded to the news splashed all over the media about two friends in Victoria, who got together in a suicide deal and hung themselves from a tree, just the previous week. She went public with her response and said, "EBONY is my name. I'm 18 and I just wanted to write to you about the article in the Herald Sun about the two girls who killed themselves, Jodie Gater and Stephanie Gestier. I have tried to kill myself a few times. Once was by overdosing on about 80 different pills, which ended me up in a psychiatric unit in Melbourne last year. I have had plastic surgery on my wrist from cutting a tendon when I slit my wrist. I have been diagnosed with depression as well as post-traumatic stress disorder; I was raped by a so-called "friend" when I was 16. But I was depressed before then . . . I'm still in a bad way, but I'm kind of getting there.”
Ebony spoke on behalf of all those depressed teens who wish to end the sadness by killing themselves. She confessed that it is dangerous to feel suicidal. And worse, if one finds another equally depressed friend - the motivation to end one’s life is that much more. It is akin to working together for a common goal.
The two girls who were found hanging ended their lives in the hope of finding better lives in heaven together, as revealed in their suicide notes. This is indeed a wake up call to the nation to help the many teens in the throes of depression - who could take the extreme step of entering into a suicide pact with an equally depressed mate, to nip their own lives in the bud.
Ebony has beseeched the case of depressed teenagers who need help.
