Doctor: '32.5 Percent In Jharkhand Forest Suffering From Cataract'

After conducting an eye camp on Republic Day, a doctor said that over 32 percent of people in Saranda forest in Jharkhand are suffering from cataract.

After conducting an eye camp that was inaugurated by union Rural Development Jairam Ramesh on Republic Day, a doctor said that over 32 percent of people in Saranda forest in Jharkhand are suffering from cataract.

Saranda forest, now a den of the Maoists also lacks basic facilities like road, power and health centres.

Ramesh hoisted the national flag in the Saranda forest on Republic Day. "After a long time democracy is back in Saranda forest. People of the area now awaking for their rights. When I hoisted national flag, people demonstrated for power. This is a good sign," Ramesh told reporters here Jan 26.

The eye camp was organised by Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital in Saranda which was inaugurated by Ramesh. In the eye camp 1,000 patients were checked in two days and 32.5 per cent people mostly tribals were found suffering from cataract.

The eye screening camp took place at Augustine School, Manoharpur Jan 26-27.

At lest 250 patients from the camo have been chosen for hi-tech cataract surgery with foldable intra ocular lens to be done at Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital here.

"I was stunned to found a family of Balram Gope whose two children are suffering from cataract in both eyes since childhood. We selected them also for cataract surgery," Dr Bharti Kashyap, director of the hospital told IANS.

"Most of the selected patients for cataract surgery had systolic blood pressure 140 or above probably due to higher salt intake in their regular diet," the doctor said.

"We will in future also organise such eye camps and try to help the needy people," the doctor said.
