A 55-year old garment worker in Karnataka woke up from her surgery to find that doctors had operated on her right foot instead of her left. Kamalamma revealed that following an accident at her factory, where she slipped in the restroom, the doctors told her that she required a surgery on her injured foot.
When she was being wheeled into the operation theatre, she pointed out her left foot to the doctors before going under anesthesia but was shocked to find out later that her right foot was bandaged.
Even as the family members and Kannada activists protested in front of the hospital, Dr Kalyan S, orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, said that there has been no mistake and the operation was necessary and carried out with consent from her family. “We were waiting for the swelling to reduce on her left ankle and operated on her right ankle because that was the part that required an operation. We also took a consent letter from the family before the surgery. But, now they are not allowing us to explain”, Dr Kalyan said.
