Sleep attacks without any warning is a characteristic problem among victims of Narcolepsy, which can upset their ability to carry out normal day to day tasks. Unfortunately, this condition has no known cure.
A doctor in Belgium has hit upon a rather different solution to help a narcolepsy patient carry out routine tasks. The patient’s pet dog has now been trained to wake up the patient during the sleep attacks.

A 5-year-old mongrel named Idefix has been trained to wake up his owner by nipping at his ankles or ears during these uncontrollable sleep attacks. The patient can now carry on normal functions in society and look beyond the problem troubling her for most of her life. Even simple routine tasks like ironing and cooking were extremely difficult as there is a concern that she will fall asleep.

This service dog has given its owner the independence she always wanted. Handicapped by this ailment for many years, she can now breathe a new life.
