A bill is proposed to be passed in South Carolina, which will enable the early release of inmates from jail if they donate their kidneys. If this bill is passed, then the prisoners could bring down their stay in the jail by as many as 180 days.
Democratic Senator Ralph Anderson who is recommending this legislation opines that the passing of this bill could help a lot of patients who are badly in need of organ donors. According to ABC report there are around 100,000 Americans who are waiting for suitable organ donors. Around 7000 of these people die annually due to the non availability of organ donors.Earlier federal law passed in 1984 on organ transplant is reported to be contradictory to the present recommendation on organ donation. But Senator Anderson is very optimistic and feels that this legislation will be passed. According to him, this legislation if passed has the potential to improve the health care services in the country.
