In Scotland, a drug that aids patients who suffer from persistent iron overload has been cleared. This was approved by Scottish Medicines Consortium.
Patients suffering from a rare genetic condition or conditions of anemia like sickle cell disease need regular blood transfusions. Generally these people are given a painful infusion at nights by needle and pump which lasts for around 12 hours. But the new drug Exjade is an oral administration to bring down the level of iron in them. This drug was launched in United Kingdom since September 2006.
