Drug Possession and DUI Earns a Day in Prison for Tyson

Pleading guilty to the charges of drug possession and driving under the influence (DUI) in a 2006 case, boxer Mike Tyson was sentenced to a day in jail and three years probation.

Pleading guilty to the charges of drug possession and driving under the influence (DUI) in a 2006 case, boxer Mike Tyson was sentenced to a day in jail and three years probation.

Tyson, who had been arrested during a traffic stop outside a Scottsdale, Arizona club last year (06), submitted his plea at a hearing in September (07) after he was charged with one felony count of cocaine possession and one misdemeanour count of DUI.

According to his lawyer David Chesnoff, the 41-year-old former heavyweight champion has since been seeking treatment at an inpatient facility program for "various addictions", as well as attending Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Tyson, as claimed by Chesnoff, has taken 29 drug tests since the 2006 incident, and all of them have come back negative.

Prosecutor Shane Krausner had appealed to Arizona's Superior Court Judge Helene Abrams on Monday (19Nov07), to sentence Tyson to one year in jail, stating that the former boxer was a multiple offender who had previously been convicted of a violent crime.

However, Abrams did not sentence Tyson to the maximum four years and three months behind bars, she instead sentenced him to only one day in jail, praising him for taking action against his drug problems.

"You worked to address your addiction and self-destructive behaviour," Contactmusic quoted Abrams as telling Tyson, prior to delivering the sentence.
