In a major step towards curbing incidents of drunk driving, the Maharashtra government has revealed that it is mulling a law that could see offenders lose their license if they drive when drunk above the maximum limit.

Home minister RR Patil said that the number of deaths due to road accidents caused by drunk driving has risen drastically over the last decade. According to latest figures, over 75,000 road accidents occurred in the last year with more than 75 percent due to drunk or rash driving.

Patil revealed that a 300 percent hike in fines, up from Rs 2000 to Rs 6000, had no effect in curbing drunk driving with the police registering more than 57,000 cases last year. The state government is now looking towards imposing a stiffer punishment that could see the offender lose his license.

“We recently hiked the fine, from Rs2,000 to Rs6,000, for drunken driving. But there has no reduction in the number of cases. We will start cancelling licenses from the first incident of drunken driving we come across now”, Patil added.
