Eating Disorders Rife Among US Women

Researchers at the University of North Carolina have found that a majority of women aged between 25 to 45 years in the United States have some form of eating disorder.

Some 4,023 women responded to an online questionnaire issued by lead researcher Cynthia R. Bulik and co-researcher Lauren Reba-Harrelson. They found that at least 65 percent of women suffered from faulty eating habits.

Another 10 percent of the women reported symptoms that strongly suggested they were suffering from bulimia nervosa, anorexia, and binge eating disorder.

“Our survey found that these behaviors cut across racial and ethnic lines and are not limited to any one group. Women who identified their ethnic backgrounds as Hispanic or Latina, white, black or African American and Asian were all represented among the women who reported unhealthy eating behaviors," Bulik revealed.

The unhealthy eating habits persisted in the women regardless of their race or ethnic origin, the researchers reported. The online poll was held by Self magazine.
