Eight more African countries will be included in the $1.2 billion U.S. malaria program. The number of African countries benefiting from this program has risen to 23. This five-year program is called the Malaria Initiative and its primary aim is eradication of malaria.

More than a million people die due to malaria every year and 90% of them are from Africa, most of them being children.

The World Bank has promised to fund $180 million for this program.

The program includes allocating funds to control the spread of malaria through insecticides , supply anti-mosquito bed nets and also provide drugs for those infected.

At the Malaria summit, Mr. Bush told government leaders, officials and malaria activists "The goal of defeating malaria is a challenging goal.”

"We know exactly what it takes to prevent and treat the disease. The only question is whether we have the will to act."
